Project Overview

GEM are proud to have been part of a project with deep historical roots: the Military Archives facility at Cathal Brugha Barracks.

This flagship initiative within the 1916 Rising Commemorations program was officially opened by President Michael D. Higgins in April 2016. It serves as the home for our nation’s military archives, ensuring they’re kept safe for generations to come.

The project wasn’t just about creating something brand new. It involved the construction of a new 800m2 two-storey archive block linked to an existing two-storey structure that once served as a barracks hospital. This historic building was restored to its former glory under our care.

The new archives building stands strong with a concrete frame and four-hour fire resistance. Its advanced features, like the multi-level automated storage and cutting-edge M&E systems, showcase GEM’s dedication to blending history with modern excellence.

We’re not just building structures, we’re preserving stories and legacies. This project is a testament to that commitment.
